Good news in the world of CBD- the state of Wyoming has reversed their standing, officially legalizing the cultivation and sale of hemp and hemp-derived CBD oil!
Now Wyoming’s farmers and retailers alike will be able to take part in the booming CBD market they were previously barred from participating in, which some are calling a huge boon for their businesses.
Old Rules
Previously, Wyoming officials did not acknowledge a distinction between marijuana and hemp products, and in a press release from April, 2018, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation stated that products with any trace of THC (even below the federal legal limit of .3% THC) were considered illegal, as they contained a Schedule 1 controlled substance. Stores carrying CBD products were told to remove them from shelves, and for a while, it seemed as if CBD advocates had hit a wall.
What Changed?
Then, in December of last year, the 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law. The Farm Bill made hemp legal to grow and sell in the U.S., and removed hemp-derived CBD from the controlled substances act. With that, the federal stance on hemp and hemp-derived CBD was solidified. Would Wyoming really continue to ban farmers from growing a potentially lucrative crop? Would they continue to keep people from a potentially beneficial product?
We got our answer earlier this month- No! Hemp and hemp-derived CBD are officially legal in Wyoming!
The Governor of Wyoming, Mark Gordon, signed the bill into law earlier this month, reversing the state’s previous stance on hemp and hemp-derived CBD. A Wyoming news source reported that the bill made it through Wyoming’s House and Senate with ease, showing strong support from both sides.
One of the reasons for the overwhelmingly positive response is the swift action of CBD advocates and spokespeople in Wyoming, and from around the country. People who’ve experienced the benefits of CBD stood up and spoke out about their success stories, and it seems as if the state legislature listened.
Moving Forward
Laws are changing every day- and there is always hope for progress. This example in Wyoming is a perfect representation of that: for people in Wyoming, for a while, it looked as if CBD was off the table for good. Now, not only is it back on the table, it’s been signed into law with overwhelming support.
That’s progress, if you ask us.
