Herbs for Sleep

What They Do & CBD Products for Sleep

We take sleep pretty seriously over here at Grassroots Harvest. Not only is it a wonderful thing, it improves your immune system, mental & physical wellbeing. Now that’s some important stuff!
The thing is, not everyone gets perfect sleep all the time, in fact, plenty of people struggle to get the solid, restful sleep they need. Difficulties falling asleep & staying asleep are all too common, and it causes the body to miss out on crucial rest. Find out how herbs for sleep may help!

What can we do about it, though?

There are so many things sold to improve sleep, and how many of them are actually a gimmick?
When it comes to improving our sleep, we take it back to basics- what have humans used for centuries? Herbs.
Herbal medicine is a longstanding tradition, and there are LOTS of herbal remedies for sleep problems.
We’ve collected some of our favorite herbs for sleeplessness or poor sleep, and we’re going to talk about them here! Many of these botanicals appear in our CBD products- we’ll tell you why we chose these plants later on.

Our Favorite Herbs For Sleep

Valerian– Valerian root has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Valerian root is known to interact with a brain chemical called GABA, which acts like a messenger in the brain & seems to help things like stress & anxiety. Studies show valerian root may slow the breakdown of GABA, therefore increasing its effectiveness. Less stress = more calm, which typically means better & longer-lasting sleep.

Lavender– Lavender is perhaps one of the most well-known herbs for sleep, and with good reason! A study at Wesleyan College examined 31 people over the course of two nights- one night they smelled lavender essential oils before bed, the other night distilled water. Upon monitoring their brain cycles, they found the lavender increased slow-wave sleep & helped subjects sleep more soundly. There are plenty of other studies on lavender out there, and they all point to it being great for improved sleep.

Chamomile– Chamomile is a very effective sleep aid thanks to a compound inside it called apigenin. Apigenin binds to GABA receptors in the brain (where those GABA compounds we talked about earlier typically bind to), causing sleepiness. While chamomile is great at causing sleepiness that might help you fall asleep, research hasn’t show that it helps people stay asleep.

Mint– While the science is unclear on whether mint will help you stay asleep, it is a well-known muscle & body relaxer, which might help with comfort and sleeping soundly! Peppermint tea is naturally caffeine-free, so it’s a great option before bed if you aren’t in the mood for chamomile.

St. John’s Wort– St. John’s wort is a plant that’s been around for a long time, but still holds some mystery. It appears in plant medicine going back thousands of years. St. John’s wort seems to help the brain use chemicals like GABA and serotonin that are good for sleep, stress, and anxiety. It may even have an impact on melatonin levels in the body, a chemical directly responsible for feeling sleepy. However, St. John’s wort is not fully understood. Keep in mind it may react with some medications, as well.

Kratom– Kratom isn’t what you’d typically consider an herb, but because it’s botanical we’re including it in this list anyway! What is kratom? It’s is a powder from the leaves of the kratom tree, native to Southeast Asia. Kratom usage goes back centuries for a host of different wellness purposes, and has recently become popular in the U.S.. Kratom can have different effects depending on the type you take, but Red Vein kratom is known for being relaxing & calming. Some Red Vein strains are said to be great for sleep. How We Use These Herbs

We’ve used many of these herbs when crafting some of our topical products & here’s why-

CBD Lotion- Our CBD Lotion doesn’t just have CBD inside. There’s also a blend of botanical ingredients that help make this soothing cream even more effective. One of the main contenders? Peppermint! Like we said, mint is great for relaxing the body & sore muscles. CBD + peppermint makes this lotion extremely good at relieving tension, which might make it easier to go to bed. (Our MentRelief CBD Roll-On is a smaller, more highly-concentrated option!)

Sweet Dreams CBD Roll-On – This roll-on is specifically to improve restless sleep, help people fall asleep, & ease stressed/overactive thoughts. Inside is a bunch of lavender and Blue Dreams terpenes, both of which are great for sleep. The combination of both create a soothing balm you can apply to temples, forehead, & neck for quick relief & relaxation.

Legal Lean syrup– While we didn’t make this one, we think it’s genius that the makers of Legal Lean include St. John’s wort. Like we said, it’s an ingredient used for ages- adding it into the botanical blend makes this stuff so potent.

Many of our other products contain herbs, but these are the ones that benefit sleep the most. CBD is a powerful ingredient, but it doesn’t hurt to throw in other plants to boost the impact of these products!
